Our last post talked about some of the best engagement session locations surrounding the Charleston area. An engagement session is a great way to get photos of you and your partner during such a special moment in life and it also allows you to meet your wedding photographer before your wedding and get completely comfortable in front of the camera. Today, we’ll be talking about where you should take Charleston engagement photos if you’re wanting a beach backdrop! Your engagement session is just one of the many exciting events in your journey as a couple. An engagement session is a great way to capture your love for one another and create lasting memories for you and your family for generations to come. These photos can be used to formally announce your engagement, put on invitations, print for friends and family, display at your actual wedding, and so much more! Deciding on a location for your session can be tough, especially with so many beautiful spots out there. But don’t worry, we’re here to help! Here are some of our favorite beach locations for engagement sessions in the Charleston area

Folly Beach Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve

 We love all areas of Folly Beach if you’re looking for Charleston engagement photos, but the Folly Beach Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve is definitely our No. 1 choice. There are so many different options in this small area, so with an outfit change and a short walk, it can look like your session was in two completely different places. From the rocks that lead out into the water and the driftwood trees along the beach, to the grassy, tree-covered sand dunes – you get everything there is to love about the beach in Charleston. It can be pretty busy during sunset with regular visitors coming to admire the view or check out the lighthouse, so sunrise is always a great option if you want the beach all to yourself. We think this location makes a great backdrop for an engagement session, especially if you’re native to the Charleston area!

The Battery

We know, you’re probably wondering why the heck are we bringing up the Battery when we’re talking about beach locations, but there is a small area of beach on one side of the Battery that you can climb down to. Of course, checking the tides is always important because it is such a small area. For our couples who want to have both the beach and downtown Charleston as a backdrop for their engagement photos but don’t want to be rushed for time or worry about the drive, this is a really great option to keep in mind.

Botany Bay Heritage Preserve

Another great option is Botany Bay on Edisto Island. It’s a must to check the tide charts before heading out there, because at high tide, it is impossible to even step out on the beach. But when golden hour and the tide charts align, it is easily one of our favorite places to visit. It’s also important to check the website for any scheduled hunts where the park is closed to the public.
Before you even reach the beach, there is a dirt road that is covered by a tunnel of mossy, oak trees and is a perfect place to stop and snag a few photographs at. Then, of course, there are the infamous fallen trees that have become the iconic and desired backdrop for photos. There is truly nowhere else like it in Charleston.
Our favorite thing to do is visit the beach first and then stop along the path on the way back to the car as the sun is falling below the horizon line. As the golden light spreads across the marsh and blue, pink and purple colors start to fill the sky, it’s truly a breathtaking site.

It can be incredibly difficult to choose a location, but remember that you can take photos in multiple locations if you want or need to!
